How to Play Afterlap: Three Laps, Replay Ghosts and Phase
Learn Afterlap steering, checkpoints, server-recorded replay ghosts, 1.2-second Phase timing and practical 1v1 or 2v2 three-lap strategy.
What is Afterlap?
Afterlap is a top-down online racing game for 1v1 and 2v2. The race lasts up to 75 seconds and uses three valid laps. The unusual part begins after lap one: the server records each completed route and replays that player’s prior-lap ghost as moving traffic on later laps.
Finish three laps to trigger the score limit, or hold the stronger finish and progress team score at regulation. An exact tie becomes a draw. Phase provides 1.2 seconds of obstacle and shortcut phasing on a seven-second cooldown.

A valid lap needs every checkpoint
Drive through the checkpoints in order. Crossing the finish line after skipping one does not create a lap, spawn a valid replay ghost or award the expected progress.
Look one checkpoint ahead instead of aiming only at the next painted line. The exit angle from the current gate determines whether the following corner is smooth. A small correction before the checkpoint is often faster than a large turn immediately after it.
The server validates steering, throttle, checkpoint order and lap completion. The browser cannot submit a shorter private path or invent a finish time.
Your first lap becomes part of the course
Lap one is not ghost-free practice that disappears. Its recorded samples become the route your ghost follows on later laps. A reckless first line can create awkward moving traffic exactly where you need to turn on lap two.
Start with a stable route that clears walls and checkpoint edges. It does not need to be slow, but it should be repeatable. If you drift across the apex and recover with a wide correction, remember that the ghost will replay both movements.
On later laps, watch the translucent marker before entering the place where the old route crosses your new line. The ghost follows the server record; it does not chase or target a player.
Ghosts are obstacles, not opponents pretending to be live
A replay ghost is labelled and visually translucent. It represents prior movement, not a hidden human connection. Collision behavior is authoritative, so every racer sees the same relevant ghost position.
Do not stare at the ghost for the entire lap. Identify its next crossing, choose whether to pass before or after it, then return attention to the live checkpoint.
Each player’s completed route adds their own later-lap ghost. In a 2v2 field, several histories can reshape a crowded section. The fastest geometric line may no longer be the fastest usable line once those moving obstacles arrive.
How Phase works
Press Space or the touch Phase button to gain 1.2 seconds of obstacle and shortcut phasing. The action has a seven-second cooldown. It does not waive checkpoint order or let the client declare a completed lap.
Use Phase shortly before a known crossing so the full window covers the obstacle. Activating in open track spends most of the 1.2 seconds before it matters. Waiting until after contact is equally weak because the collision has already changed the line.
Phase can also open a published shortcut window. Enter with a planned exit angle; passing through an obstacle only to face the next wall sideways can lose more time than the ordinary route.
Because the cooldown is seven seconds, a typical lap contains distinct choices. Do not assume the action will be ready for every ghost. Pick the crossing with the largest expected delay.
Keyboard and touch steering
Use WASD or the arrow keys to steer and accelerate. Smooth, sustained input creates a more predictable path than rapid opposite-direction taps. Release or reduce the turn before the racer points down the exit lane.
On mobile, use the steering and throttle pad below the track, with a separate Phase button. Keep the thumb movement small near checkpoint gates; a full-pad correction can oversteer through a narrow line.
Controls are continuous, but results are still server authoritative. Network presentation may smooth motion without changing checkpoint or collision truth.
1v1 strategy
In 1v1, your early route determines much of your later traffic. Avoid copying the rival’s position so closely that both racers and both ghosts converge at one apex. A slightly different entry can create a cleaner pass even when it travels a few more pixels.
If you lead, protect valid checkpoint progress. An invalid shortcut can erase the value of a risky gain. If behind, use Phase on a crossing that opens a real chance to complete the next checkpoint first.
2v2 team racing
In 2v2, finish and progress contribute to the team result. Teammates should avoid occupying the same narrow line when an alternate lane exists. One stable route and one aggressive route also produce different ghost patterns, making later traffic easier to separate.
Do not sacrifice a completed lap merely to block a rival unless the live rules clearly reward that position. Team progress at the horn remains valuable, and an unfinished risky maneuver can leave both teammates behind.
Instant Match, Human Only and AI
Instant Match searches for people and may fill open grid seats with clearly labelled AI. Bots use authoritative steering, record real server lap samples and collide under the same ghost and Phase rules. Matches remain unranked.
Human Only waits for every person required by 1v1 or 2v2 and never inserts AI. Private invitations and parties are not part of the promised first version.
A reliable first-race routine
On lap one, prioritize every checkpoint and choose a line you can safely meet again. On lap two, locate the first ghost crossing before reaching it. Save Phase for the crossing or shortcut that would cost the most time, activate just before entry and steer toward a clean exit.
The beginner rhythm is checkpoint, exit angle, ghost check, Phase. Race the current field while remembering that today’s line becomes the next lap’s traffic.
